Head Health Company, Ltd. and the Equalizer™ thermal regulating head cover was born out of a desire by serial entrepreneur David G. Abood to provide patient comfort and care, maintain normothermia, and reduce prevalence of post-operative infections.

Twenty years ago, Mr. Abood’s mother was diagnosed with leukemia and suffered from lymphoma “night sweats,” which left her shivering and cold despite multiple blankets. He noticed the hospital staff never covered her head, recalling his mother’s advice to always wear a hat to stay warm. This moment sparked the idea for the Equalizer solution.

Years later, he connected to a government-sponsored project to reduce post-operative infections, partly attributed to hypothermic shock from general anesthesia. The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) emphasized the importance of maintaining body temperature above 36°C before and after surgery to reduce hypothermia risks.

Research shows that even mild hypothermia can lead to increased blood loss, delayed wound healing, adverse cardiac outcomes, longer recovery times, and higher risks of surgical site infections. Maintaining normothermia is critical for surgical patients, reducing health risks and costs.

What started as a need recognized when Mr. Abood’s mother was ill with cancer has grown into a vast sea of opportunity to create a new market for the untapped area of ‘Head Health.’
